Little Elms Accommodation

The six chalets at Little Elms provide either studio or one bedroom accommodation for family members while they support a patient in the nearby hospital. The chalets are fully furnished with towels, bedding and kitchen equipment supplied and there is a shared laundry on site.The original aim of providing support for child cancer families has been widened to include families with other health issues too, including, for example, parents of babies in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

The hospital staff assess the need for accommodation and if it is deemed necessary they will organise for the support person to stay at Little Elms.

If certain criteria are met the cost of the accommodation is met by the Ministry of Health however in some cases the accommodation is provided charitably.

The holiday house is primarily used by families who have been affected by child cancer to enjoy some time in Hawke's Bay at no cost. Local businesses have been extremely generous in providing complimentary passes or discount vouchers so the families may also visit some of the local attractions.

In addition to the accommodation offered in the house and chalets the Little Elms administration building has a meeting room and family room available for use by community groups. These facilities have been used by child health support groups such as Cystic Fibrosis and Heart Children and community groups such as Womens' Institute and the SPCA.

The family room, with access to a fenced play area, is a great venue for parents to meet together and know there is a safe space for their children to play. The meeting room seats approximately 14 around the table and has a white board and TV/DVD player available for groups or small businesses needing a venue for meetings or training sessions. Full kitchen facilities are also available.
